Component Level Repairs

In the image to the left you can see a hewlett packard motherboard. At the top in the middle is the south bridge chipset. This handles the sound modem and other cards attatched to the board. This chip rarely has any problems at all. On the left is the memory chips. These will suffer problems often just after a memory upgrade as the customer may put thier greasy fingers on the contacts and cause memory problems freezing and the computer locking up. In the middle of the image are some integrated circuit chips and also some capacitors. There are 2 large bobinas on the left. the capacitors will sometimes die on the motherboard and this is quite a common problem. Whats the difference betwwen SATA and IDE hard disks

There are many different types of hard disks on the market at the moment. Here we are going to discuss the different types of laptop hard disk. The most common type of hard disk is a sata hard disk. The image on the left is of a sata hard disk. The image on the right is an Ide hard disk. When you need to order a new hard disk from a company that sells them, you will need to know the type of disk you require. If you have pins you need an ide hard disk. If your hard disk looks like the image on the laeft you will need to order a sata. Also make sure you order a 2.5 inch hard disk if its for a laptop and a 3.5 hard disk for a desktop computer. Laptop Dead On Arrival

If your laptop is completley dead there are a number of causes for this issue. Let me help you to understand the way an engineer will inspect your laptop if he finds it dead on arrival. The first thing an engineer will check is the charger. An onsite pc repair engineer will always do this first. He will test it with a multimeter to make sure the voltage is constant. If the charger is giving ou the voltage required he will remove the battery and try plugging the charger into the laptop. If the laptop is still dead and not booting up the next thing he will do is open the laptop up completly. The motherboard will be removed and inspected for liquid damage, over heating, burnt chips on the motherboard. This is done as just a 30 second check over the motherboard. The next step is to plug the charger in the motherboard and check that the power is entering the motherboard. If the voltage is passing into the motherboard and the laptop is still not turning on he will move onto the advanced stage. This is an advanced stage because most technicinans at this point will tell a customer they need a new motherboard. An enginner who understands motherboards like ourselves will test the tiny components. Starting with fuses and moving on to capacitors resistors diodes and 8 leg integrated circuit chips. The next step is to replace the power manager chip and the finally the chipset. On a laptop motherboard there is often more than a thousand chips. only 3 chips are special. They are the north bridge and south bridge chipsets and the bga graphics card chipset. These chips are very difficult to remove and replace.
